چکیده

The origin of the prominent 'knee' in the cosmic ray energy spectrum at an energy of several PeV is still uncertain. A recent mechanism has shown promise, however; this involves particles from a very young pulsar interacting with the radiation field from its associated very young supernova remnant. The ensuing nuclear reaction of the particles with the photons by way of + e e production then causes the characteristic knee. In an earlier paper we argued that the mechanism would imply only one source of a very rare type if it were to explain the spectral shape. Here we examine the mechanism in more detail and conclude that for even a single source to work its characteristics would need to be so unusual that the mechanism would not be possible for any known type of pulsarsupernova combination.

Pulsar Psr B0656+14, the Monogem Ring, and the Origin of the ‘knee’ in the Primary Cosmic Ray Spectrum

The Monogem ring is a bright, diffuse, 25◦-diameter supernova remnant easily visible in soft X-ray images of the sky. Projected within the ring is a young radio pulsar, PSR B0656+14. An association between the remnant and pulsar has been considered, but was seemingly ruled out by the direction and magnitude of the pulsar proper motion and by a distance estimate that placed the pulsar twice as f...

Contribution of nuclei accelerated by gamma-ray pulsars to cosmic rays in the Galaxy

We consider the galactic population of gamma-ray pulsars as possible sources of cosmic rays at and just above the “knee” in the observed cosmic ray spectrum at 1015–1016 eV. We suggest that iron nuclei may be accelerated in the outer gaps of pulsars, and then suffer partial photo-disintegration in the non-thermal radiation fields of the outer gaps. As a result, protons, neutrons, and surviving ...

Galactic modulation of extragalactic cosmic rays: Possible origin of the knee in the cosmic ray spectrum

The existence of the spectral break around ∼ 3 × 10 eV in the cosmic ray spectrum (referred to as the ‘knee’) is one of the biggest questions in cosmic ray astrophysics. At the same time, the origin of cosmic rays above the knee energies (between 10 and 10 eV) is also still unsettled. In this paper, we investigate how the hypothetical extragalactic CRs after modulated by the galactic wind contr...

excesses and the knee of the cosmic ray spectra — hints of cosmic rays acceleration at young supernova remnants

Supernova remnants have long been regarded as sources of the Galactic cosmic rays up to petaelectronvolts, but convincing evidence is still lacking. In this work we explore the common origin of the subtle features of the cosmic ray spectra, such as the knee of cosmic ray spectra and the excesses of electron/positron fluxes recently observed by ATIC, H.E.S.S., Fermi-LAT and PAMELA. Numerical cal...

A Review of X-ray Observations of Supernova Remnants

Although radio and optical observations have played an important role in identifying and characterizing supernova remnants (SNRs), most of the shock heated material is primarily visible in X-rays, having temperatures of typically 10 − 10 K. The emission mechanisms are bremsstrahlung and line radiation, but a number of remnants are now known to emit Xray synchrotron radiation from ultra-relativi...
